For me, it was a place of legend. I had heard for years about the museum Speedy Bill built in Lincoln, Nebraska. And so, finally, this year, my first business trip was to Speedway Motors headquarters in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The history of Speedway Motors and PRI goes back to 1989 when the company’s wholesale division exhibited in a small, new racing trade-only show in its second year of business, and hoping for a long run at it. Visiting with the Speedway Motors team this year was great fun. The brilliant founder Bill Smith, and his wife and true partner Joyce, have passed away, but the company has as much energy as ever with the Smith brothers at the helm—Jason, Clay, Craig and Carson....

It’s springtime, and most racers are thinking about how they can come out of the box strong this season and hopefully make their racing budgets last all season long. Many of them may have focused on their marketing efforts and attracting new sponsors during the offseason, and now just want to focus on the racing itself as the season starts to heat up.
But savvy racers understand the importance of converting some of the smaller sponsors they were able to bring on early in the season into full season sponsors—or better yet, up-leveling these relationships from associate or product sponsors to full level partnerships.

Remember the last time you had one of those days at the race track where, if it could go wrong, it did?

The day starts out great. The car is ready and looking good. You’ve spent the last three weeks tweaking and adjusting, and, man, she is right.

You’re loaded up and headed to the track when it begins. The AC in the truck cab quits. Then, from the back seat comes, “Hey what’s that smell?” and everyone is suddenly on the edge of their seat.
