When you think about it, sponsorships are more important in auto racing than any other professional sport. In baseball, football, soccer, hockey, golf, etc., individual players often have endorsement deals, but they don’t need them to compete in their sport. Racers very much depend on their sponsors to compete, even at the top levels.

Here’s a quote from the United States Auto Club FF2000 Media Guide: “As a marketing vehicle, auto racing is a proven winner. No sport attracts more corporate sponsorship dollars.”

As a result, racers are very adamant about keeping their sponsors happy, and it’s a big part of the sport—a detail that many might not think much about, like myself.

When I first started at Performance Racing Industry magazine over two decades ago, there was a speech I often had to give to explain what PRI was. As I introduced myself in a phone conversation or at a race as being with Performance Racing Industry, chances were very good back then that silence would follow. We were new. We were small. We were just getting started. My first PRI Trade Show was the one held in Nashville in 1990, when 400 companies exhibited in 600 booths. Recently, PRI got to spend the day at Irwindale Speedway, our local paved short track, for an exceptional event hosted by Motovicity Distribution. The Madison Heights, Michigan-based company had come to Southern California (in late winter… good call) for the culmination of its big Ticket To Ride promotion.

We’ve recently publicized the fact that the business magazine for trade shows, Trade Show Executive, published its list of Fastest 50 Growing Trade Shows in its February issue, and the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show scored in all three categories: Attendance, Exhibiting Companies and Exhibit Space. There are thousands of trade shows held in convention centers throughout the US each year, and only 90 made at least one of these categories in Trade Show Executive’s list.

Yes, it’s a big deal to make this list in all three categories. And I thought I’d post a quick note here to share my thoughts.
