FIA Sets June 20 Date For Mercedes-Pirelli Tire Test Hearing

The FIA’s International Tribunal (IT) is to meet in Paris on June 20 to hear the case against Mercedes and Pirelli concerning their recent tire test.

It follows the protest lodged by Red Bull and Ferrari at the Monaco Grand Prix.

The IT will consider whether the three-day test, conducted in Spain last month using a 2013 car, broke Formula One regulations, which—with the exception of the annual young driver test and limited straight-line aero work—prohibit the use of current cars for in-season testing.

Meantime, Mercedes have said that they welcome the opportunity to explain their recent tire test with Pirelli.

The International Tribunal is part of a new judicial system established by the FIA in 2010. Comprising a 12-man panel, its remit includes ruling on cases that cannot be dealt with by race stewards.

In this case, race stewards in Monaco sent a report to the FIA after Mercedes were protested by rivals Red Bull and Ferrari. Ferrari also participated in a Pirelli test earlier this season, but the FIA has confirmed that this did not contravene the rules, as a 2011 car was used.

The FIA has said a decision will be announced as soon as possible after the hearing. Should Mercedes and/or Pirelli be found guilty of charges, the IT has the power to impose a wide range of sanctions.
