Now under new leadership, Mansfield, Ohio’s north side race track is getting a new name, too.
Formerly known as Mansfield Raceway, Mansfield Motorsports Speedway and Mansfield Motorsports Park and Mansfield Speedway, the facility that houses the half-mile oval will be rebranded as Spitzer Motor Speedway.
Spitzer Motors of Mansfield has done business with the track over the years and will continue to do so in 2015 as it reopens for business June 21.
The track has been dormant since July 2010. Grant Milliron, who bought the track at a sheriff’s sale two years ago, originally contracted last fall with northern Ohio promoter Kevin Ruic to bring racing back to the facility in 2015.
Spitzer signed up as one of the chief sponsors, but when racist Facebook postings by Ruic were revealed, his promotion deal was scuttled and racing called off.
K&B Promotions, which runs Sandusky Speedway as well as a few regional touring series, stepped into the void. The promotion struck a deal to lease the track from Milliron so its traveling series didn’t lose the dates it had scheduled under Ruic.
Knowing Spitzer was going to do business with the track’s former promoter, general manager of K&B Doug Dock said they called the automotive group about restarting sponsorship. During those conversations, the idea of renaming the track after the dealership was hatched.
Spitzer Motors will also have a retail display and offer giveaways as part of its promotion of the track.
