Canada’s South Buxton Raceway To Add Seven To Hall Of Fame

South Buxton Raceway, a dirt track located in South Buxton, Ontario, Canada, will induct seven into its Hall of Fame over the weekend.
Officials have announced the inductees set to be inducted during a fifth annual ceremony as Mike Bennett, Walter McLlroy, John McLlroy, Brett Reaume, Jimmy Jones, Tom Hazlett and Garry Lemesurier.
Bennett, working as a sports editor for Chatham Daily News, chronicled the raceway’s happenings for almost a quarter-century. He also found work as the track announcer and later as the raceway’s media coordinator.
Walter and John Mallory are brothers that are set to be inducted, following their brother Bob’s induction in 2017. Both Walter and John began dirt track racing in Southern Western Ontario in the 1970s.
Reaume began racing in 1977, and although he claims to have too many wins to recall, his 2004 Dirt Series win stands out. Now retired, Reaume owns West Side Performance Plus, a parts store in Blenheim, Ontario, that sponsors the Late Model Features class.
Jones, who has been racing since 1976, also helps his grandson Cohen’s race crew during their kart races at South Buxton.
“There is no one else I’d want my children to look up to. I’m super proud of their racing team,” Jones’ stepdaughter Shawna Deschryver said in a track release.
Hazlett began his racing career in 1973 and has raced among many of this year’s inductees. Although he has several wins under his belt, Hazlett stresses his love of the sport all around.
Lemesurier began his career as a drag racer before competing as a dirt track racer for a year. In 2014, he took over operations of South Buxton Raceway with his wife, Sherry. Today he owns over 15 race cars, including his step son’s Chris Ross. His driver John Pinsonneault was the first Late Model crate win at the track.
“It’s a privilege to drive for him. He’s been involved in this sport since well before my time. From being a car owner to running the track now, he puts his heart and soul into it,” Ross said.
