Race Team Alliance Adds Membership

The Race Team Alliance’s bargaining power with NASCAR may have grown on Wednesday. Its membership certainly expanded.

The RTA upped its member total to 18 teams, adding most of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ single-car outfits and completing the set of every multi-car team in the sport’s premier series by adding Front Row Motorsports, BK Racing and Tommy Baldwin Racing, among others.

The RTA, formed in July, is a not-for-profit business league comprised of race teams participating in Sprint Cup. The group’s goal, according to an RTA release, is to create an open forum for the teams to explore areas of common interest and to work collaboratively on initiatives to help preserve, promote, and grow the sport of stock car racing.

“One of the early goals of the Race Team Alliance was to expand our membership, and after only a month in existence, we have accomplished that goal,” said Rob Kauffman, the RTA’s elected chairman and co-owner of Michael Waltrip Racing.

“We now have virtually all the full-time teams participating. I think the membership as a whole is enthusiastic to get to work on some of the other items on our agenda, in particular some of the cost areas and marketing opportunities we have already identified.”

The RTA membership now includes: BK Racing, Circle Sport, Front Row Motorsports, Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, Germain Racing, Go Green/FAS Lane Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, HScott Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, JTG Daugherty Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing, Phil Parsons Racing, Richard Childress Racing, Richard Petty Motorsports, Roush Fenway Racing, Stewart-Haas Racing, Team Penske and Tommy Baldwin Racing.

Thirty-seven full-time Sprint Cup teams comprise the RTA’s league in a series that has 43-46 cars attempting to race every weekend.

The highest-profile non-RTA team is Colorado-based Furniture Row Racing, which fields the No. 78 Chevrolet for Martin Truex Jr.
