Tony Stewart, Davey Hamilton and Kevin Swindell led a cadre of industry stakeholders as presenters at a special Short Track Drivers Safety Seminar Friday afternoon at the PRI Trade Show.
The four-hour seminar at the Indiana Convention Center included a driver symposium featuring Stewart, Swindell and Brian Gerster, as well as sessions such as "What It Takes To Break Your Back - Not Much," "How To Make Your Racing Seat More Protective," and "How Do I Know If I Have A Concussion And What Do I Do About It." Dozens of racers and medical/safety personnel turned out for the event, which was co-presented by the International Council of Motorsport Sciences (ICMS) and the Stand 21 Safety Foundation.
"It was known that we don’t have enough safety equipment in our sport, and they talked about some great ways that we could improve that in our racing," said sprint car racer Shelby VanGilder. "We try to have the best safety equipment, and it was important to see that we're doing it right."
Friday's seminar was among several on driver safety and protection offered at the 2016 PRI Show. For instance ICMS, which held its Annual Congress at the convention center earlier in the week, also conducted a Race Track Safety Program Friday that included educational sessions and hands-on practical sessions and demonstrations geared toward local short tracks, road courses and drag strips across the US and Canada.
The 2016 PRI Trade Show takes place December 8-10, at the Indiana Convention Center. For information or to register, visit www.pri2016.com.
