New Book 'Motorsports Mavericks' Captures Racing in the '60s & '70s
A new motorsports history book exploring notable drivers, rivalries and technological developments from the 1960s and '70s is scheduled for release on September 8, 2026.
Published by Motorbooks, "Motorsports Mavericks" is written by racing historian George Levy and features photography from the late Pete Biro. The book examines a period of significant change in motorsports through interviews, archival sources and historical accounts from drivers, team owners and innovators who competed during the era.
According to the publisher, the book includes perspectives from figures such as A.J. Foyt, Dan Gurney, Don Garlits, Jim Hall, Richard Petty, Mario Andretti, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda and Derek Bell. Topics covered include major rivalries, advances in vehicle technology and engineering, and prominent racing events of the period.
The book also highlights competition across multiple disciplines, including sports car racing, drag racing, Indy car racing and Formula 1, and also comes complete with a foreword by the legendary Roger Penske.
Levy is a motorsports author, speaker and historian who previously served as president of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. He began his journalism career at Autoweek and has contributed to publications including RACER, Car and Driver and Vintage Motorsport. His previous books include "Can-Am 50th Anniversary: Flat Out with North America's Greatest Race Series," "F1 Mavericks: The Men and Machines That Revolutionized Formula 1 Racing" and "Texas Legend: Jim Hall and His Chaparrals."
"Motorsports Mavericks" will be released September 8 in hardcover format. The 240-page book includes approximately 200 photographs and carries a suggested retail price of $50 in the United States and $60 in Canada.
