Sonny’s Racing Engines Celebrates 50 Years

Sonny’s Racing Engines has been in operation for 50 years as of 2018. Founded by Sonny Leonard in December of 1968, the engine builder rose to prominence with innovative engine design and uncompromising performance.

Leonard is currently designing the engine that will be given away during the 2018 PRI Trade Show, set for December 6–8 in Indianapolis, Indiana, in conjunction with Sunnen's 30th Engine Charity Sweepstakes. The raffle-style drawing will see all proceeds going to Victory Junction, a camp for children living with serious medical conditions founded by NASCAR’s Petty family. A winning ticket will be drawn Saturday, December 8, and one lucky entrant will take home a custom-built 727-cubic inch Hemi engine valued at more than $60,000.

The engine can be street-driven on 93 octane fuel, producing 1310 HP, naturally aspirated. The engine will also include Sonny’s fully in-house ported hemispherical cylinder heads, Sonny’s/Brodix 5.000 B.S. block with 1.000” raised cam with special hi-flow water jackets, a Bryant billet crank, Carrillo steel billet rods, and much more.

A part from the Sweepstakes, Sonny’s Racing Engines holds over 100 national and world records on both land and sea, according to Engine Builder, with 17 world championships in Pro Stock alone across the IHRA, PDRA and ADRL.

Sonny’s Racing Engines offers both hemispherical and wedge configurations to accommodate 500 to 1000 cubic inch engine platforms.
