Museum of American Speed Acquires Historic John Mahoney Collection

The Museum of American Speed has announced the acquisition of the historic photography collection of renowned racing photographer John Mahoney.
Museum Director Clay Smith shared that the Lincoln, Nebraska–based museum has purchased the extensive archive of Hall of Fame photographer John Mahoney, calling it a historically significant addition to the Museum's holdings.
"We at the Museum of American Speed are honored to be the new home of the John Mahoney archive," Smith said. "John is one of the most important racing photographers in the history of the sport, and his work documenting legends from A.J. Foyt to Kyle Larson speaks for itself. The Museum of American Speed will make every effort to use John's images for the betterment of the sport of auto racing."
Echoing Smith's sentiments, Museum Historian Bob Mays added, "John is the undisputed leader in the photographic documentation of auto racing history over the last seven decades, and we are honored that he has chosen the Museum of American Speed to preserve and continue his legacy."
The collection includes more than 165,000 images, as well as works from other noteworthy photographers whose materials were previously entrusted to Mahoney for preservation.
Mahoney reflected on the decision, saying, "After sixty years of living the dream of shooting my favorite sport, it's time to put my photo career on the trailer. My negative and digital files are now housed at the Museum of American Speed. This new arrangement couldn't have worked out better—with my long-time photographer and publisher friend Bob Mays overseeing my collection at the fabulous facility founded by 'Speedy Bill' Smith. My wife Martha and I are fortunate to enjoy good health and look forward to continuing adventures."
Mahoney's website, johnmahoneyphoto.com, which features more than 15,000 open-wheel racing photographs, will remain active and will transition to management by the Museum in the near future. Updates will be shared on the Museum's official website at museumofamericanspeed.org.
The Museum of American Speed previously acquired the Leroy Byers Archive of Denver, Colorado, in 2019, and the Earl Garretson Archive of Astell, Georgia, in 2024. With the addition of Mahoney's work, the Museum now holds one of the most significant motorsports photography collections in the country.
